Village Reaches Agreement to Purchase Property for New Public Works Facility

Land acquisition paves the way for the Village to move forward on the construction of a new Public Works Facility as part of the Elk Grove 2025

The Village is excited to announce that it has reached an agreement with the property owner of 434 E. Devon Avenue for the acquisition of 8.6 acres of land.  This acquisition will allow the Village to begin moving forward on the construction of a new, state-of-the-art Public Works administration and operations facility.

The 434 E. Devon location is currently home to Berthold’s Floral, Gift and Garden Center.  Berthold’s has been in operation in the Elk Grove community since 1948.

Mayor Johnson said, “While we are extremely excited about what this site holds for the future of Elk Grove Village Public Works, I would be remiss not to mention how sad we will be with the loss of the Berthold’s Gift and Garden Center.  I encourage everyone over the next several months to stop by Berthold’s as they transition into their next chapter.”

The Garden Center will be closing as of June 30, and the Flower and Gift Shop will be closing as of July 31.

The new state of the art building will be replacing the Village’s outdated facility.  Originally built in 1960, this building has served the Village in numerous capacities. Over the years, the building has served as Village Hall, Police Station, Courthouse, and as a Fire Station.

Unfortunately, the 3.7-acre parcel is severely undersized for use as a modern Public Works facility. Also, its inefficient pie-shape and proximity to the single-family residential homes make operations difficult. Moreover, the interior of the building has become functionally obsolete for modern Public Works operations.

It is anticipated that construction of the new facility will begin early this fall, and it is anticipated that the new facility will be ready for operation in early 2019.  While the building is still in the design phase, the new facility will consist of approximately 20,000 square feet of office space for the 65 employees, and nearly 70,000 square feet of garage, shop, and storage area for the Village’s 110 pieces of equipment.  The new facility will also be home to a 2,500-ton salt barn and a fueling station, which will also be used by the Northwest Suburban Municipal Joint Action Water Agency.

The final terms of the agreement will be made available at the June 20 Village Board meeting.

The construction of the new Public Works facility is another component of the Village’s overall Elk Grove 2025 reinvestment program.

It was announced last month that the Village had reached an agreement with Elk Grove Township to take over the existing Public Works facility, located at 600 Landmeier, in exchange for property the Township owns at 711 Chelmsford in Elk Grove Village.  The Village is currently negotiating the sale of the Chelmsford property, with the proceeds of that sale being used to help offset the purchase price of the Devon Avenue property.
