UPDATE: ROAD HAS BEEN REOPENED Road Closed Due to Natural Gas Line Break – Leicester, Biesterfield to Gloucester
At approximately 7:45 am on Monday, August 7, 217, an excavator from RW Dunteman struck a 2 inch natural gas main on Leicester Road, just north of Biesterfield Road, while digging for the installation of a water main. This incident occurred on Leicester Road adjacent to the parking garage at the Amita Medical Center/Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village.
As a result, Leicester Road was closed to automobile traffic between Biesterfield Road and Gloucester. In addition, crews from the Elk Grove Village Fire Department and NICOR were immediately dispatched to keep the area safe while arranging for repairs to take place. Firefighters utilized natural gas meters and equipment to ensure that the area was safe for occupancy while NICOR crews installed valves on existing pipes to isolate the leaking pipe. NICOR was finally able to extinguish the natural gas leak at 2:40 pm.
While the natural gas leak has ceased, Nicor crews are continuing work to replace the damaged section of pipe over the next several hours. As a result, Leicester Road is expected to be closed to automobile traffic until after 6 pm in the evening on Monday, August 7. Patrons visiting Alexian Brother Medical Center have had and will continue to have access to the medical facility from both Biesterfield Road and from Beisner Road.
The Village of Elk Grove would like to extend its appreciation to area residents, Alexian Brothers Medical Center staff and visitors to the area for their patience and understanding during this work. In addition, the Village would like to thank NICOR, the Elk Grove Fire Department, and the initial mutual aid responders for their assistance in ensuring the safety of the area.
