Be on the lookout for the Gypsy Moth. This leaf-feeding insect is a serious threat to ornamental and deciduous trees. If you see this insect, please call Public Works at 847-734-8800.

The brownish hairy caterpillars are easy to identify by the red and blue dots on their backs. Caterpillars are 2" long. They can be seen in April and May.

The caterpillars can defoliate trees and shrubs and kill some soft wood trees in a very short period. Their trees of preference include Oak, Apple, Alder, Aspen, Willow, Birch, Cherry, Hemlock, Hickory, Maple and Pine.

What YOU can do:

Inspect newly purchased nursery stock thoroughly for caterpillars "hitching rides" on trees and shrubs.

The only way to manage the Gypsy Moth is to arrest its migration.
