NOTICE: As of January 1, 2019, the following electronics are no longer accepted at SWANCC permanent drop offs or one day events: answering machines, household appliances (such as toasters, blenders, coffee makers, lamps, vacuum cleaners, etc.), microwaves, shredders and stereo equipment. Any working electronics can be donated for reuse. Microwaves can also be taken to metal scrap yards, such as Elgin Recycling, which offers multiple locations for scrap metal recycling. All other broken electronics that are not covered by SWANCC can be thrown away in the garbage.
Starting January 1, 2012, the State of Illinois began enforcing the recycling law known as the Electronic Products Recycling and Reuse Act. The law bans certain electronic items, such as computers and televisions, from Illinois landfills. Elk Grove Village residents will no longer be able to place certain unwanted or unused electronics out at the curb for disposal after that date.
To assist residents of member communities the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWANCC) has developed an environmentally safe way to dispose of unwanted or unused electronic items. Four SWANCC communities will be operating ongoing old electronics drop-off programs.
Residents can find information on locations that accept electronics for recycling (some in Elk Grove Village!) using the map of electronics recycling locations available on the SWANCC website. You can see a preview of the map below.
Locations marked in GREEN accept televisions (fees may apply). Locations marked with a GREEN RECYCLING SYMBOL are SWANCC drop-off locations and all accepted items are free of charge to residents of Elk Grove Village.
Additionally, SWANCC hosts a number of one-day electronics recycling events during the spring and summer, including one in Elk Grove Village each June. A full schedule of one-day events can be found on the SWANCC website. Once it is scheduled, the date for the Elk Grove Village event will be posted on the Village Calendar.
