Elk Grove Village Celebrates Opening of New Facilities
Elk Grove Village held a Grand Opening Event to mark the completion of three new facilities on May 18, 2019. The Grand Opening event featured the new Fire Station 8 at 700 Fargo Avenue, Fire Station 10 at 676 Meacham Road and the Public Works Biesterfield Facility at 1635 Biesterfield Avenue.
The new Fire Station 10 at 676 Meacham Road replaced a 40-year-old, 7,000 square foot firehouse, which had reached the end of its design life. The new facility is 16,000 square feet and features many new updates. During construction, firefighters operated out of a temporary location within the updated Public Works Biesterfield Facility. Firefighters moved into the newly constructed Fire Station 10 on April 29, 2019.
The new Fire Station 8 at 700 Fargo Avenue is a 21,000 square foot facility with a 4-story, 11,000 square foot training tower located in the Business Park. This station consolidated the equipment and personnel to replace two former fire stations—the 48-year-old fire station located at 1655 Greenleaf Avenue, and the 27-year-old fire station located at 1000 Oakton Street. Firefighters moved into the new Fire Station 8 on April 30, 2019. The former fire stations at 1000 Oakton and 1655 Greenleaf are now closed.
The new fire stations were constructed to allow for enhanced operational efficiency and sufficient space for future growth. Areas along the apparatus floors provide adequate storage for all equipment and gear to be kept separate from the living quarters. Significant consideration was also given to proactive efforts to combat the incidence of cancer in firefighters due to exposure to carcinogens. The new training tower at Fire Station 8 is a masonry burn building with 2 individually controlled gas-fired burn props and integrated smoke system.
The rehabilitation of the Public Works Biesterfield Facility at 1635 Biesterfield Road was completed in January 2018 and opened its doors to allow the public to tour the upgraded facility as part of the Grand Opening Event for the adjacent Fire Station 10. The rehabilitation included a complete facade overhaul of the existing 37-year old building, the addition of a salt storage facility to serve the western portion of the community, additional storage space, and interior renovations to improve operations, landscape enhancements and parking lot rehabilitation.
Village Officials hosted Ribbon Cutting Ceremonies for both Fire Station 10 (676 Meacham Road) and Fire Station 8 (700 Fargo Avenue).
“The completion of these new facilities is a major milestone in the Elk Grove 2025 program, which is providing the infrastructure to serve our community for the next generation and beyond. The Fire and Public Works Departments provide essential services to the community and these new facilities will help ensure efficient and effective operations.” said Elk Grove Village Mayor Craig Johnson.
Fire Station 10, Fire Station 8 and the Public Works Biesterfield Facility were constructed as part of the Elk Grove 2025 Capital Program. The Public Works Biesterfield Facility was completed in 2018 and Fire Stations 8 and 10 were completed in April of this year. Other projects in the Elk Grove 2025 plan include street resurfacing projects, bicycle/pedestrian access projects, major road projects, and improvements to street lights and Village aesthetics.
