James Paul Petri Public Works Facility and new fleet service garage recognized as “Project of the Year” by Chicago Suburban Branch of the American Public Works Association.

Elk Grove Village’s two new and renovated public works facilities have earned “Project of the Year” recognition from the Chicago Suburban Branch of the American Public Works Association, the leading international organization serving public works professionals.

Recipients of the award include Elk Grove Village, HR Green, who provided project oversight and inspection services, construction management firm Nicholas & Associates and the architectural firm ARCON Associates.

“We’re proud to earn the recognition from the American Public Works Association because it validates our commitment to providing our residents and businesses with top-notch public facilities and services,” said Colby Basham, Public Works Director for Elk Grove Village.  “The team that designed and built these state of the art facilities, on behalf of the residents of Elk Grove Village, did so with great care and planning to serve the community today and tomorrow. We are very grateful for the foresight of the community and elected officials to provide us with such wonderful facilities to continue to serve the community well into the future.”

James Paul Petri Public Works Facility and the public works fleet garage won the award in the category of “Project of the Year” for structures budgeted between $25 and $75 million from the APWA Chicago Suburban Branch.  The projects collectively were completed on time and under budget.

The Petri Public Works Facility, which opened last January and is located at 450 E. Devon Ave., is a sprawling 84,000 square foot facility that houses utility and infrastructure maintenance shops and more than 100 vehicles and pieces of equipment.  An on-site salt barn allows for more efficient snow removal operations.  A modern, smart water station provides private contractors with a facility to purchase large amounts of water from the Village for various construction needs.  The facility also is home to administrative offices.

The modernization of the public works fleet garage located at 1635 Biesterfield included a complete facade overhaul of the existing 37-year old building, the addition of a salt storage facility to serve the western portion of the community, additional storage space, and interior renovations to improve operations, landscape enhancements and parking lot rehabilitation.

These two facilities are just part of the improvements made under Elk Grove 2025, a long-range $135 million capital plain aimed at enhancing Village infrastructure and facilities.  Components of Elk Grove 2025 include facilities construction, road reconstruction and resurfacing, streetscaping enhancements, street lighting, drainage projects, and bicycle and pedestrian improvements.

“Delivering exceptional services in an efficient and cost-effective way to our residents and businesses is job number one for the Village.  We cannot deliver on that promise without modern facilities,” said Elk Grove Village Mayor Craig Johnson.  “Further, our hard-working and dedicated employees are better-equipped to perform their jobs more safely and effectively when they have the most up-to-date facilities and equipment.  The accolades we’ve received are a genuine honor, but we are most satisfied because these facilities help us do our jobs better for our community.”

Leaders from the Village and its partners will receive the award at a banquet later this month.
