The Elk Grove Village Police Department is inviting the public to participate in the 22nd National Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday, April 30, 2022. As part of this event, participants can bring in expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs anonymously at no cost to the Elk Grove Village Police Department lobby (901 Wellington Ave.) between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm.

The National Prescription Drug Take-Back Initiative is a joint effort of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and law enforcement agencies across the nation to provide the public an opportunity to remove potentially dangerous prescription drugs from their homes as they can be highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. The rate of prescription drug abuse in the United States is alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. This initiative addresses vital public safety and public health issues. 

DEA, along with its law enforcement partners, has now collected 7,634 tons (15,268,473 pounds) of expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs since the inception of the National Prescription Drug Take-Back Initiative in 2010. The last Take-Back Day in October 2021 alone brought in 372 tons (744,082 pounds) of medication.
