Village’s ban on unregulated sales of products containing THC drawing interest from other municipalities

Post Date:04/12/2023 8:11 PM

Since closing a loophole last month that allowed for the sale of unregulated products containing THC at local smoke shops in town, Village staff members and elected officials have been fielding calls from many different municipalities who have expressed interest in adopting similar ordinances, Elk Grove Village Mayor Craig Johnson reported at the Village Board meeting on April 11.

Last month, the Village Board unanimously passed an ordinance that prohibits licensed tobacco and “smoke shop” operators from selling any products containing THC, the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis.

Upon learning that the sale of unregulated products such as delta 8 vapes, edible candies such as gummy bears, and similar products containing THC was taking place in the Village and placing young people at risk, the Village took immediate action.

Just days after news of the ordinance became public the Village began receiving inquiries from different municipalities and governmental agencies seeking information about the ordinance and how the Village will go about enforcing it.  In all, at least 15 municipalities have reached out, according to Mayor Johnson.

“When we announced this ordinance late last month, it was our hope that other communities would enact similar measures so we can present a united front against the sale of unregulated and unsafe products to adults and children,” said Elk Grove Village Mayor Craig Johnson. “The fact that we’ve heard from so many communities large and small demonstrates that more can be done in more jurisdictions to keep people safe.  Now, we urge state lawmakers to adopt statewide legislation so we can be even more effective.”

In the past two weeks, there have been over six violations for ID checking requirements and underage sales at two local smoke shops in the Village. These continued issues with under-regulated tobacco operators reinforces the need for the Village to take action and protect the health and safety of its younger residents related to the sale of THC products.
