The Chicago Department of Water Management (CDWM), in partnership with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA), is currently implementing an update to its corrosion control, a process designed to help further reduce lead levels for customers with lead service lines. Elk Grove Village does not have any lead service lines and as such, this change should have no impact to our water customers.
CDWM conducted a Multi-Year Corrosion Control Study, which concluded that a higher concentration of orthophosphate (70%) performs better at reducing lead levels than the current blend of 60% polyphosphate and 40% orthophosphate. As a result, the CDWM will begin transitioning to a new corrosion control process, starting with a 30% polyphosphate / 70% orthophosphate blend in December 2024. This transition will continue until the process is fully switched to 100% orthophosphate by the summer of 2025.
CDWM does not anticipate any changes to the water quality as a result of this transition; however, there may be temporary and minor water discoloration/cloudiness. Cloudiness in water is not a health concern and is also a common occurrence during the winter months due to cold water being able to hold more air bubbles.
Again, Elk Grove Village does not have any lead service lines and as such, this change should have no impact on the water quality in Elk Grove Village—the water in Elk Grove Village remains safe to drink and of the highest quality.
Elk Grove Village understands the importance of providing clean, safe drinking water—our Public Works Department monitors water quality on a daily basis.
