Elk Grove Public Works Department Honored with Award for Clearmont Drive Pedestrian Bridge Replacement

Post Date:02/03/2025 4:00 PM

The Elk Grove Village Public Works Department has received a Project of the Year award from the American Public Works Association (APWA) for the successful completion of the Clearmont Drive Pedestrian Bridge Replacement project. The award was presented at the Village Board meeting on Tuesday, January 28, 2025.

The Clearmont Drive Pedestrian Bridge, which celebrated its grand opening in June 2024, provides vital connectivity between two residential neighborhoods by crossing Salt Creek. The new 400-foot-long, 14-foot-wide, two-span bridge replaces a deteriorating 200-foot single-span bridge built in the 1980s, which had frequently experienced flooding during rain events. The project is a key element in improving pedestrian safety and enhancing access to nearby parks and Clearmont Elementary School.

“The Clearmont Drive Pedestrian Bridge is not just a functional infrastructure project, but also an investment in the long-term safety, accessibility, and beauty of our community,” said Mayor Johnson. “The dedication to both utility and aesthetics reflects our ongoing commitment to improving Elk Grove Village for all who live and visit here.”

The bridge features a unique design, scenic overlooks, energy-efficient LED lighting, and ADA-compliant features which provide ease of access for all users. By elevating the bridge out of the floodplain, the new structure not only minimizes flood risks but also ensures year-round accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists.
The design process was supported by Baxter & Woodman, which assisted in securing Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program (ITEP) funding and led the engineering efforts.

The project reflects the Village’s continued dedication to fostering sustainable and community-centered infrastructure improvements.
