Fire Prevention Week has been a national observance since 1925. It is held each year during the week of October 9th, in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. It is an annual reminder that we all need to take some time to understand how to stay safe in the event of a fire, or better yet, prevent them from happening in the first place.

The Elk Grove Village Fire Department is holds its annual Fire Prevention Week Open House at Fire Station #7, 101 Biesterfield Road. The 2019 campaign theme chosen by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) was “Not every hero wears a cape. Plan and Practice your Escape.” The goal is to educate people about the importance of having a home fire escape plan to reduce the likelihood of being trapped in a fire
