Benefits

Minimum Requirements and Qualifications

Be a United States citizen, and must speak English;
At least 21 and under the age of 35 by the date of the written examination, unless exempt by state statute;
Possess high school diploma or GED equivalent;
Completed 60 semester college credit hours from an accredited college or university-OR-must have served 24 months of active duty or 180 days of combat duty as designated by the Department of Defense in the United States Armed Forces, and have not been discharged under circumstances other than honorable. (This requirement does not apply to lateral candidates.)
No felony convictions and must be of good moral character. The applicant understands that the Village is not requesting, nor should the applicant disclose expunged juvenile records of adjudication or arrest;
Possess a valid state-issued driver's license;
Possess 20/40 corrected vision;
ANY visible tattoos or markings above the collarbone such as the neck, head, face, tongue, lips, and/or scalp, are expressly prohibited. Tattoos deemed obscene or offensive in nature, as determined by the Office of Human Resources, must be concealed.
Successfully pass a written examination, background investigation, oral interview with the Board of Fire and Police Commission, polygraph, medical evaluation (to include drug and alcohol screening), and psychological evaluation;
Must possess a valid POWER Test card, issued within 12 months of the application deadline date;

Only POWER Test cards issued by NIPSTA, Triton College, or Joliet Junior College will be accepted.
Applicants must present the POWER Test card NO LATER than the application deadline date.

Preference Points: A maximum of (4) preference points will be awarded as determined by the Village of Elk Grove Village for any one the following: military and education.

Summary of Hiring Process

PHASE 1

Submit an online application
Complete a mandatory written examination
- Following completion of all application materials and review of minimum
  qualifications, successful applicants will be invited to participate in remote on-line written exam testing.
Make the eligibility list
- The Preliminary Eligibility List will be created listing all applicants earning a score of 70% or higher on the written examination. The top scoring 100 candidates will be eligible to participate in oral interviews. Candidates earning a passing score of 70% or higher on the oral interview will be ranked on a Final Eligibility List based upon their combined written examination score and oral interview score plus preference points earned.

As openings occur, candidates on the eligibility list will be processed through the remaining components in Phase 2.

A candidate who successfully passes their individual oral interview will be extended a conditional offer of employment contingent upon satisfactory psychological and medical evaluations.

A candidate who fails any component of the testing process shall be excluded from further consideration during this hiring process but may reapply at future tests.

The Final Eligibility List will remain in effect for two years. If all names are exhausted prior to the list's expiration, the Fire and Police Commission will return to the preliminary eligibility list to process the next group of candidates to create a subsequent Final Eligibility List. This list shall bear the same expiration date as the previous Final Eligibility List.

Important Note to Applicants: It is the applicant's responsibility to keep the Village of Elk Grove Village Police Department informed of any email, telephone, or physical street address changes if the applicant moves. If the applicant does not notify the Commission of their email, telephone, or address change and the Police Department is unable to locate the applicant at the email, telephone, or physical street address indicated in the application, the applicant may be removed from the eligibility list

Are tattoos and body piercings permitted?

Tattoos that are visible to the public when working are generally discouraged and ANY visible tattoos or markings above the collarbone such as the neck, head, face, tongue, lips, and/or scalp, are expressly prohibited.

Tattoos below the collarbone, including on the arms, may be visible provided the tattoo(s) is/are not obscene, offensive, sexually suggestive, profane, or discriminatory toward a person on the basis of race, color, national origin or ancestry, religion or creed, age, sex, disability or violate a professional standard.

Village employees displaying tattoos deemed obscene or offensive in nature, as determined by the Office of Human Resources, must be concealed. The ability to display tattoos does not, in any way, affect the requirement to wear appropriate uniforms and/or utilize safety equipment.

Violations of the above policy will be evaluated, and discipline may be given in accordance with the Employee Manual and/or any respective Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Is there a residency requirement?

No, we do not have a residency requirement.
