Project Description
The Tonne Rd. Reconstruction project consists of sidewalk removal and replacement, installation of a new concrete shared-use path in the median of Tonne Rd., concrete curb and gutter replacement, watermain replacement, storm sewer upgrades, roadway lighting & traffic signal upgrades, and the complete reconstruction and realignment of Tonne Rd. to improve traffic flow and safety.
Project Updates
May 15, 2026: This week, work continued installing storm sewer laterals on southbound Tonne Road and box culverts in the median. Next week, work will continue with more storm sewer and box culvert installation as well as cutting the roadway to subgrade and preparing the new aggregate subbase.
May 8, 2026: This week, work continued installing storm sewer laterals on southbound Tonne Road and box culverts in the median. Next week, work will continue with more storm sewer and box culvert installation.
May 1, 2026: This week, storm sewer laterals were installed on southbound Tonne Road between Laurel Street and Fargo Avenue and box culverts were installed in the median.. Next week, work will continue with storm sewer and box culvert installation.
April 24, 2026: This week, storm sewer laterals were installed on southbound Tonne Road and pipe culverts were installed in the median near Morse Avenue. The roadway was also removed further south of Laurel Street. Next week, work will continue with storm sewer and box culvert installation.
April 17, 2026: This week, storm sewer laterals were installed on southbound Tonne Road. Trees were removed on Landmeier Road as well. Next week, storm sewer work will continue and roadway base preparation will begin.
April 10, 2026: This week, the water main was chlorinated and the water services along southbound Tonne Road were transferred over to the new water main. The final connection to the existing water main system was made at Landmeier as well. Next week, storm sewer laterals will be installed and work to prepare the roadway base will begin.
April 3, 2026: This week, water main installation and pressure testing was completed along southbound Tonne Road between Fargo Avenue and Landmeier Road.
Next week, crews are scheduled to chlorinate the newly installed water main and transfer the service connections to the new main. In addition, storm sewer laterals will be installed along this same stretch of southbound Tonne Road.
March 27, 2026: Water main installation progressed this week along southbound Tonne Road between Fargo Avenue and Landmeier Road.
Next week, crews are scheduled to complete pressure testing and chlorination of the newly installed water main. Following these activities, service connections to the new main will begin. In addition, storm sewer lateral installation may commence along this same stretch of southbound Tonne Road.
March 20, 2026: At the beginning of this week, work was delayed due to the weather conditions. Lima connected the water services to the new water main on the northbound side of Tonne and made the connection to the existing system at Landmeier Road. They also began work on the water main on southbound Tonne Road. Next week, work will continue on the southbound Tonne water main.
March 13, 2026: This week, Lima Contractors pressure tested and chlorinated the water main for northbound Tonne Road. They also began installing storm sewer in the Tonne median at the north end of the project. The southbound Tonne road closure and detour was implemented and work on the southbound water main began.
Next week, water main installation will continue on southbound Tonne Road.
March 6, 2026: This week, Lima Contractors completed installation of the new water main along northbound Tonne Road from Fargo Avenue to Landmeier Road. This phase of work included the complex installation of the water main between major east-west water and gas distribution lines within the corridor.
Next week, crews are scheduled to begin installing storm sewer in the median. Water main improvements are also expected to start along southbound Tonne Road.
The permanent southbound detour may be implemented as early as next week. Once in place, through southbound traffic will be redirected to Lively Boulevard. Access to southbound Tonne Road will remain available for local residents who live along the corridor.
February 27, 2026: This week Lima Contractors installed inlet filters and silt fence along the corridor. The also implemented a lane closure on northbound Tonne Road and removed pavement for preparation of continuing the water main north to Landmeier Road. Next week water main improvements are expected to begin on northbound Tonne Road.
February 20, 2026: Construction began this week on the Tonne Road Reconstruction project. This project will reconstruct Tonne Road from Landmeier Road to just north of Greenleaf Avenue, including the implementation of the Michigan -U crossover at the Elk Grove Boulevard intersection. New lighting, median bike path, sidewalk, culverts and the completion of the water main to Landmeier will also be improved as part of this project. This week, Lima Contractors mobilized and began tree removal and ditch clearing along the Tonne Road corridor. Next week, potholing and preparation for the water main improvements along northbound Tonne, north of Fargo will commence.
February 13, 2026: Changeable message signs will be on site in anticipation of vegetation clearing in the median the week of February 16, 2026
